3 Questions You Should Ask Your Brand Designer On A Free Consult Call
It’s standard in the design industry to have a free consult call with your brand designer before jumping into a project. This is to make sure that you both are a good fit for each other. Different brand designers have different things that they are looking for when interviewing potential clients, but just as they are going to be asking some questions, you can come into the conversation equipped with your own questions as well. Here are three that you can ask your brand designer to set yourself up for success, and to show them that you are interested and committed.
What is your process like?
Wooof, understanding your designer's process is crucial. Heck, it’s more than crucial, but I’m not sure what verbiage can convey importance more than crucial does. Why? Well, imagine you are eagerly awaiting your first round of concepts from your designer and come to find upon delivery that instead of the myriad of options you’d been envisioning, there is only one. Many designers operate under the one design method (which has its pros and cons which you can read about here). Or perhaps the opposite occurs, you thought that the process would only include one fully fleshed out design but instead, there are a million decisions to make because of all the different options. Speaking with your designer from the get-go about the process will also help you to understand the cost and time which goes into design.
How will communication work?
There are a ton of different ways in which designers communicate with their clients. There are online portals, software, social media, emails – the list goes on and on. Your designer will have figured out a method or mode of communication that works best for their business, but there may be a small learning curve for you as a client. Understanding how to log in to your dashboard and understanding how files will be shared or concepts presented will help instill confidence in the process, final work and designer.
How many revisions are normally required/how many are included in your packages?
All of us designers want you to love your final design. In order to love your final design, there will 100% be revisions to the initial concepts presented. This is because no matter how talented your designer is, they are not mind readers. Revisions or edits will almost always be necessary, but how many you get or how much additional rounds will cost differs depending on the designer. Placing a set number on the amount of revisions you get or charging for additional revisions is to help streamline the process. This makes sure that the project feedback is purposeful and keep the momentum going. If an infinite amount of revisions are allowed projects will lose steam, and design goals are bound to get jumbled up in a mess of back and forth – and that isn’t what we want. When purposeful feedback meets experienced ears revisions can be kept to a minimum.
